The main ship’s engine is the main propulsion system of the ship, which drives the propeller, and, depending on the design, operates on an auxiliary generator for full or partial provision of the vessel with electricity. Mitsubishi offers a large selection of main marine diesel propulsion engines in a wide range of capacities up to 1.8 MW and more than 100 kW, intended, among other things, for difficult operating conditions.

Advantages and features of Mitsubishi’s main marine engines

During the development of the main marine engines Mitsubishi engineers took into account the main requirements and conditions of their operation, among which special attention was paid to the following factors:

  • High humidity and aggressiveness of the air.
  • High ambient temperature.
  • The need for a high resource of work and resistance to failures.
  • Automatic control from a remote point (felling), the possibility of continuous operation without manual adjustment.
  • Compact.
  • Easy maintenance.
  • Possibility of operation on heavy diesel fuel grades.

To solve these problems, each ship propulsion engine has the following design advantages:

  • Compact design for easy installation and maintenance.
  • Separated design of heads for separate maintenance of cylinders.
  • Highly efficient combustion of fuel thanks to the vortex chamber, the design of high pressure pump and turbocharger. Due to this, the main ship engine has an efficiency of 95.5%.
  • Simplicity and convenience of the control system.
  • Efficient liquid cooling system and self-cleaning fuel injectors.

The last important feature of Mitsubishi’s main marine engine is the improved water cooling system. Due to this, the heat load is significantly reduced, the necessary conditions are created for a long uninterrupted operation. Highly efficient oil supply system ensures uniform supply to all friction units, significantly reducing their wear and extending the service life. This is especially important under particularly severe operating conditions, in which the main propulsion engine operates.
